Free piano performance coming to Sharjah

Music has a magical ability to bring people together from all over the globe, and next month a performance combining African American jazz pieces with Arabic music is coming to Sharjah.

Composer and musician Tarek Yamani will be performing a number of paired pieces including Chico Buarque’s Com Acucar Com Afeto with Darwich Al Hariri’s Muwashah Hubbi Zurni, Harry Warren’s You’re My Everything with Ziad Rahbani’s Bala Wala Chi and Dizzy Gillespie’s A Night in Tunisia with Kamel Al Khulai’s Fi Hulal Al Afrah.

The free performance will take place at the Hamdan Bin Moussa Courtyard in Al Mureijah Square from 8pm till 9pm on Friday November 1.

The Afro-Tarab Pairings Project performance will take place after a three-day workshop by Yamani entitled Jazz Tactics and Essentials of Improvisation.
Yamani, who is Lebanese-American and lives in New York, taught himself jazz at the age of 19 and has worked on exploring the relationship between African American jazz and classical Arabic music for a number of years.

He previously won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Composers Competition.
